RIVERSIDE: On Senior Night, on their home field, King High’s boys soccer team took on the 2020 League Champ, Santiago and after a spirited game, handed the champs a draw. Playing to a 2-2 tie, the Wolves had to console themselves with the notion that they gave the top team in the Big 8 all they could handle.
For Coach Todd Mapes, it was a bittersweet night, as 12 of his roster are seniors and this was their farewell. Already confirmed before the game was the fact that for the first time in 11 seasons, King would not be a part of the CIF Championship rounds that begin next week.
On this night, all the Wolves had to play for was pride.
King got off to a great start with goals by Leo Mendez and Manny Nunez and led 2-0 at the half. Santiago came back strong in the second half, but the Wolves held on for the tie.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our young men tonight. We fought hard to the final whistle and that just showed their character and outstanding determination” said Mapes.
Such qualities don’t show on the score board, in the CIF brackets, nor the final league record. But they mark the players of King, win, lose or draw.
