CORONA: On Monday, September 30th, the Lady Wolves(2-3 in BIG VIII, 14-9 Overall) traveled to face the Sharks of Santiago High School in a BIG VIII league match up.

The Lady Wolves came out strong to start the match and took control of the first set. In the second set the Sharks responded and took an 18-13 lead. The Sharks had set point at 24-19 but the Wolfpack battled to tie it at 24 and take a 25-24 lead only to lose the next 3 consecutive points and the set 25-27.
“Looking back on the match, that was a really important set” said captain Jaden Grova. “We had all the momentum from the first set and then coming back and just lost focus for a few plays. If we win that set, we probably win in 3. We have been really working hard all season long to be more consistent and to compete hard. I’m really proud of the fight our team had tonight.”
Set 3 was more like set 1 as the Lady Wolves took command and controlled the entire set. In set 4 the Shark’s home crowd really came alive as the Sharks got off to a hot start due to some unforced errors and miscommunication.
The Wolves battled but couldn’t produce a run of plays to catch the Sharks as they found their stride in a 21-25 win to even the match 2-2 to force a decisive set 5!
The Wolfpack and the Sharks traded points back and forth until the Wolfpack took the lead at 8-6. King maintained their lead until the Sharks closed in at 13-12.
King called a time-out to break the momentum. The Wolves came out of the time out and got a big kill after 3 rallies to score 14-12 and had match point. The Sharks scored the next point to tie it at 14-14 and King took advantage of an error to get another match point 15-14. The Sharks maintained their composure and capitalized on a hitting error, an ace and a kill to win the 5th set 17-15.
Coach Duncan said of the match, “First, I am so very proud of the way our team fought and competed with character. Tonight we showed ourselves we can dominate our opponent and execute a game plan set by set. We were unable to do it consistently and it was the difference in the match. We played really well and put ourselves in position to win the match but we were unable to take advantage of those opportunities. Give the Santiago a lot of credit for a great match and we look forward to another hard fought battle at our place.”
