While King High track athletes were competing this past Saturday in the CIF-SS Master’s meet in sunny and breezy So-Cal, the State Junior College Championships were going on in rainy Northern California. It was a wet, soggy day but the Tigers of Riverside Community College, the sun shone bright!! The Tigers men’s team won it’s 7th State Championship under the tutelage of Head Coach Jim McCarron while the Women’s team, under Damien Smith, finished in the runner up position.
8 “King kids” helped lead the way on Saturday. Distance ace Austin Dai ’17) picked up points in the 5000 and 10,000 meter runs; Dillon Lay(’17) scored in both the 110 and 400 Hurdles; Brett Shifflet (’17)was 6th in the state in the Hammer Throw and Phil Griggs (’17) helped the 4 X 400 team to a second place finish.
Alec Jones, (’17) finished 8th i the state i the shot put; second in the discus and was the STATE CHAMPION in the Hammer Throw. All by himself, Alec contributed 19 points to the RCC cause. Another STATE CHAMPION was Marcos Gonzales (’17) in the javelin as he tossed the spear 201-8-19 feet past his qualifying mark from the SoCal regional Finals!! On the girls side of things Keiana Turner(’18) finished 6th in the discus while Gabby Sanabria (’17) nabbed 5th place in the javelin.
As of this report, both Marcos and Alec have signed letters of intent to attend and compete at Cal-State Long Beach. Alec Jones was also named the 2019 RCC Kinesiology and Athletics Student of Distinction.
