SAN DIMAS: On the road again for their second game of the CIF Championship rounds and the King baseball team knew their order was a tall one: Beat Bonita HS, the #4 seed in the division.
That they did, in a nail-biting way, winning by a score of 3-2.
It was a well-played and intense game, with Parker Welch starting for the Wolves. The game remained scoreless until the 6th inning (only 7 innings make a full game in high school play) when King finally broke through, putting up three points.
The runs were produced by Junior Parker Welch’s taking one for the team by getting hit by the pitch and ultimately coming around to score on a wild pitch.
A single by Senior Bryce Meyer and a mammoth two run Home Run by Sophomore Kaden Moeller put up the 3 runs on the board.
King gave two right back to Bonita on a solo home run and a couple of hits.
Pitcher and Senior Gabe Briones came into the game in the 7th to close it out, but the final frame in the close game was not without drama.
After recording the first out via a strikeout, Briones gave up a single. The runner — and potential tying run — advanced to 2nd on a subsequent pitched ball in the dirt.
The next batter up hit a hard line drive that was caught and a quick throw to second doubled up the runner and the game was over.
King will continue its run in the CIF 2nd round by hosting Redondo (23-9) at home on Tuesday. The game starts at 3:15 pm
