Coach Shaun Harris‘ undefeated Big 8 League champion tennis squad opened up CIF action on Wednesday against South Torrance High School.
They didn’t know what they were getting into.
“Without much knowledge of our opponents strengths we went into the match prepared to just do our best” said Harris.
To make matters even more challenging, Doubles starter Ishan Modi wasn’t competing as he was at a DECA competition.
Senior Andrew Lehrack stepped up and into the big shoes of Modi.
The first round was a stand-off as King – with Lehrack’s step up performance – earned 3 sets in doubles and South earned 3 sets in singles.
In the second round play, the opened the door for a King win with doubles earning another 3 sets and Senior captain Jaeson Kim earning a singles set.
Harris said, “Going into 3rd round at 7-5 with confidence in our doubles to close out, it was singles earning 2 sets and doubles getting another 2 sets to finish off the day at 11-7.”
“To be honest I was very nervous all day since we were missing Ishan in addition to 2 of our starters having been gone from practice Monday and Tuesday for State Science Fair. It was great to see these young men play controlled and consistent tennis.” Harris said.
“Our #1 and #2 doubles swept” he added, “and singles came up big to gives us the sets needed.”
The second round of CIF is home Friday against Rancho Cucamonga.
