SAN DIEGO: With a tense and exciting victory in the first round of the State Tournament of basketball Thursday night, the girls from King High are getting ready for some madness in March.
The last day of February proved to be just about what all of February has been for the Lady Wolves, a night with another win. The vanquished this time was Cathedral Catholic.
March will bring the Regional Semifinals and hopefully a berth in the Southern California Finals, and then, on to State.
They had to do their work on the road, where they took on the Lady Dons in North County San Diego.
“The Lady Dons were ranked #1 in CIF Division 1 State brackets and were coming off an Open Division San Diego City Championship” said Head Coach Jesus Martinez who has guided his team to a stunning 31-2 record this season.
The Lady Wolves made an early run and gapped the Dons by double digits, led by a solid offensive attack and great defense. Alexis Mead was a part of that attack, ultimately scoring 22 to lead the team.
But the Lady Dons fought back quickly, hitting big 3 point shots to even the score with a few minutes to go in the 1st half. The Lady Wolves used a press to get the lead back right before halftime, 32 to 37.
The second half saw numerous lead changes and some great defensive stops on both ends by both teams. While the Dons would get close, King’s defense was the needed measure to keep them at bay. “Our girls stepped up their defense and got some key stops” Martinez said.
The win was an upset over the #1 seed with a final score of 49 to 44.
The Regional Semifinals of the State Playoffs will be on Saturday night against La Jolla Country Day, in La Jolla. The game starts at 6:00.
It’s now March. Let the madness begin.
