Two of the mantras for this year’s swim team are to do the little things right and to show up for one another. Matt Howard is a guiding force behind accepting those principles and applying them each day.

Matt Howard has always done things the right way. He is motivated to improve and excel in the pool setting his personal goals high and making sure he does all the little things right to get there. Matt never misses a practice, or shuts down during a hard workout, or gives anything but his best in a race. These traits have always been observed by his coaches, but most notably his team has benefitted from recognizing him as an outspoken leader. Matt clearly walks his talk and is willing to stand up for what is right and motivate and push his teammates to do the same. Matt’s work ethic is also revealed in the classroom, earning a 4.0+GPA the past three years as a scholar athlete.

Matt has been a three -time letterman for the Wolves, working his way to top finishes in the Big VIII League as well qualifying for CIF. Early in to this season, Matt is starting where he finished last year. Coming close to matching personal bests and CIF qualification standards, Matt’s consistency and reliability as a sprinter for the Wolves has him as an integral part of the success of the team relays. His enthusiasm for his team and his willingness to “show up” and lead by example is why he is selected as this year’s Character Counts athlete.
