RIVERSIDE:  22 ain’t bad.  Not when 22 is a string of games in the win column in league. Not when that string stretches across two seasons.

The boys soccer team has been that good for that long in the Big 8, but the string snapped on Monday night at the feet of Corona with a score of 2-1.

The Wolves went into the second half of the game with an up-hill climb, already down 2-0 in a game notoriously stingy in points.

“We had another slow start” Coach Mapes lamented afterward, noting a trend his players have had all season despite their aforementioned unblemished record.

But the boys staged a “furious comeback” in the second half, playing with greater intensity.  Osvaldo Padilla scored, with an assist by Santiago Mejia.  But it wasn’t enough and the game went to the Panthers, and the 22-0 streak went down the drain.

All is not lost however.  The 2018 title, that crown King (at 7-1-1) entered this season intending to defend, can still be theirs to wear again on Wednesday night should they prevail against Centennial.

If King can beat the Huskies (7-2), then back-to-back League Champs will be theirs to boast of and it’ll be time to start another streak.
