SISTER ACT HEADLINES BIG 8 TOURNAMENT

SJOERDSMA SISTERS

MENIFEE LAKES:  The Sjoerdsma sisters – Morgan and Chandler – have had quite a season, helping to take the 2017 girls golf team to an undefeated season and a “three-peat” League Championship.

On Tuesday in the first round of the Big 8 Tournament, the two siblings had another stellar performance together, as they have several times this season.  They shot a 77 and a 76 respectively to lead the charge for the Wolves, but their teammates had great games as well.  Rebecca Hawes, Jordan Yin, Hailey Higgenbothem and Delany Crump all shot between 86-89 for the 18 holes.

The girls’ scores will carry over to a the second round as the tournament is a two day, 36-hole competition. The second round will be played on Thursday in Fontana at the the Sierra Lakes golf course.

At stake are All League honors and advancement to the CIF Individual round of play which will be held at the Dad Miller course on Monday.  Even more, the top golfer in the league will be crowned the League MVP.

A usual 18 holes of golf can take upwards of five hours, with each player on the team shooting between 76 and 89 strokes.  “Yesterday’s match had a lot of pressure shots” said King assistant coach Ann Dena Sjoerdsma.  “For an entire team to shoot these scores denotes a great day of high school golf.”

She continued, “It’s been told by a professional golf coach, that the pressure in each golf shot equates to the pressure of a free throw shot with 5 seconds left in the game, down by one;  knowing it takes one to tie and two to win.’

Whom the league MVP will be is too close to call.  For the two sisters from King, perhaps it doesn’t matter.  Whichever one grabs the top billing, the ultimate hope is that together,  their play will be strong enough to qualify their show for a sequel, to be played out next week in CIF.

Stay tuned.
